How is this entity connected?
Follow the same entity across integration, architecture, comparison, research and glossary layers. Links are generated from content metadata and topic similarity.
Skyscanner separates car-rental discovery, live search and agent information. Its Travel APIs introduction lists Car Hire Indicative Prices, Live Prices and Agents as distinct products.
Production scenario: a discovery price becomes a booking promise
A destination card shows rentals from EUR 25 per day. A traveler selects a late pickup, another return station and a younger driver, then sees a higher live total. Compare pickup/return times, stations, driver age, currency, vehicle category and inclusions before calling this stale pricing.
An indicative discovery price is not a guaranteed quote for different conditions.
Product boundaries and access
| Need | Product | Does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Broad exploration | Indicative Prices | Held vehicle for exact rental |
| Specific rental search | Live Prices | Confirmed booking |
| Seller identification | Agents | Complete rental policy |
Confirm account access and permitted use for each product. Flight-search access does not establish car-search entitlement, and a working search key does not make an application a rental-inventory publisher. Commercial terms and referral rules come from the partner agreement.
Live lifecycle and model
The Car Hire Live Pricing reference documents create/poll operations and reuse of the session token. Model a session separately from a booking, bound polling and stop abandoned searches. Do not copy the flight adapter's version or merge behavior into the car adapter.
The reference distinguishes vendor and agent identifiers and exposes price, daily price, pickup method and additions. Preserve operator, selling agent and deep link separately. An airport search location is not necessarily the final station or shuttle desk.
Keep total and daily price separately typed. Separate mandatory charges, optional extras, refundable deposit and contingent charges. Unknown mileage or cancellation remains unknown.
Failure modes
| Symptom | First evidence | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Live total differs from discovery | Request dimensions and price basis | Explain changed context |
| Some providers missing | Session status and filters | Inspect lifecycle and normalization |
| Operator right, seller wrong | Vendor/agent mapping | Repair seller identity |
| Price scale is wrong | Amount unit and conversion | Correct interpretation |
| Terminal lands at shuttle office | Station and pickup method | Repair location continuity |
| Checkout fails after search | Quote age, agent and policy | Refresh or withdraw stale offer |
These are internal categories, not provider error codes. Route confirmed-order issues to the seller in the booking confirmation.
Operational metrics and checklist
Measure time to first useful offer and completion separately. Track completed/valid started sessions with abandonment and errors reported independently; monitor poll volume per active session.
Measure resolved agent references and equivalent successful landings with explicit denominators. Split mismatches by station, policy, driver, price and availability. Count bookings only when authorized reporting supplies confirmation evidence.
Test partial results, denied product access, young driver, one-way return, changed pickup time, missing agent metadata and unavailable quote. Verify that result updates preserve the selected seller and mobile landing context. These controls are engineering recommendations, not Skyscanner SLAs.
